Secularize this!

The Times yesterday printed an article from the Associated Press with the following remarkable story:

The European Court of Human Rights ruled Tuesday that the display of crucifixes in Italian public schools violated religious and education freedoms, a decision that could force a review of the use of religious symbols in government-run schools across Europe. The court rejected arguments by Italy that the crucifix was a national symbol of culture, history and secularism. ...

Come again, the cross a symbol of secularism? What would a symbol of Christianity look like then?
