京剧

The talent of this performance of "锁麟囊" (Unicorn-trapping purse) at the Shanghai Art Theater was too bright for my cellphone camera. But notice the throng of fans - mostly men - who've mobbed the stage with their cellphones for the curtain call! I've never seen or got Peking Opera before, but by the end I was starting to appreciate it. The enthusiasm of the fans sitting around us up in the peanut gallery, rippling in waves of delighted applause, was infectious. It reminded me of the diehards in the Stehplätze at the Staatsoper, and the guys shouting the performers' names at the Kabukiza.
