1821-23

The last time the volcano under Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier erupted - 189 years ago - it continued, on and off, for two years. Imagine what this would mean for air travel today. A new life for oceanliners? It's like a pre-21st-century disaster, says my housemate - and a reminder of the not so distant future when the end of oil supplies will bring an end to air travel.
