Strange to go see a live broadcast from the Met in a shopping center in Mira Mesa but I was happy even to put up with the smell of popcorn for
Berlioz' "Les Troyens." The opera, new to me, was sublime, over- powering, devastating. And to add excitement a ravishing young tenor named Bryan Hymel with a voice like none I've heard in ages, who stepped in a few days ago as Aeneas and deserves to be the toast of town. Not that Susan Graham's Didon wasn't splendid and awe-inspiring!
I've heard "Les Troyens" likened to "The Ring" and I see why. It's epic, leaving one with a knot of huge emotions that feels truer than life.
