Road Trip Day 6: 洛阳

Spent much of the day at the enormous 洛阳博物馆 Luoyang Museum, gratefully reconnecting with the past; this Eastern Han (25-220) pottery workshop will have to represent the collection's wonders. Much of the collection was discovered relatively recently, often in the course of construction projects - a bittersweet realization. (Peter Hessler noted this irony, too.) The past doesn't seem quite as paved over as yesterday, though there still seem precious few ways current residents could feel themselves connected to it in more than a schlocky theme park sort
of way. The rest of the day was spent escaping the heat as others do in 2018 Luoyang, taking in a Starbucks coffee, a movie (Kore-eda Hirokazu's "万引き家族/Shoplifters," which just won the Palme d'Or at Cannes) and dinner at a Wanda shopping center full of young children with their entourages.
