Spring is here and people want to go out! And out they go, to parks, beaches, onto the streets. From our perch high above Broadway we can see clusters of people waiting outside restaurants, several more of which reopened (for takeout) this weekend, and on street corners. Masks? A few. Social distancing? Between groups but rarely within them.
It reminds me of a time, years ago, when I visited my sister, studying abroad in Madrid. We sat in the second-floor window of a coffee shop at Plaza del Sol, watching the pickpockets, who worked in pairs. One would brush roughly past a pedestrian who would reflexively reach for their wallet and relax in relief to discover it was still there.
