Surfing the internets for material on religion and anthropocene today I happened on an amazing project by the Senegal-based model-turned-photographer Fabrice Monteiro called
The Prophecy.
Gaia, the mother earth, [is] exhausted by her incapacity to maintain the natural cycles of the planet in front of new modes of life and consumption, he has
explained,
She resolves to send her djinns [children], to let them appear to the humans and deliver a message of warning and empowerment. These spectacular images of wounded and warning spirits, their costumes designed from local waste by Senegalese fashion designer Doulcy, were destined for use in a children's book.
Begun in 2013, the photo series has been presented in various festivals and museums (and websites), and seems to be ongoing. A recent addition takes in the bleached coral of the Great Barrier Reef.
