For "Religion of Trees" I want students to engage with trees by drawing them, and am imagining a whole sequence of exercises, from generic trees to specific trees to trees from multiple angles (including perhaps from below?!) to imaginary trees to the spirits in trees, details like buds and leaves and cones and seeds, roots of course, and the connections of tree to their kin of many kinds. Still very much a work in progress! But I thought I'd better try it myself, so pulled out an old MUJI notebook and committed to filling it with tree sketches. This first one is of one of three saplings planted in a pot outside a coffeeshop in Chelsea.
