Today's hymn from Lift Every Voice and Sing struck some of our fussier parishioners as "like Sunday school." It is certainly musically and theologically pretty uncomplicated. I went from finding it a little silly, its start like something from a merry-go-round, to getting into its simplicity - especially because of the fermata in the second to last measure, which I realized (we've had a few such hymns) is a moment for high emotion. And wouldn't we love for God to take care of us right now.
